Adding Humor to a Grief Presentation: Challenges and Benefits

Every presentation needs variety. Without variety the speaker risks losing his or her audience. Humor is one of the best ways to retain audience attention. Because I’m an experienced speaker, I know this. Still, I struggled to find ways to insert humor into a workshop about growing from grief.

Why did I want to add humor? One reason was the healing power of laughter. Laughter relieves tension and can energize us. I also think people who are grieving need to give themselves permission to laugh. Laughter lightens the mood and helps us to believe in the future again. When people laugh together they come together.

So I reviewed my workshop outline and looked for places to add funny stories. This process made me think of the actor Eddie Albert, who was a close friend of my father-in-law’s. Dad and Eddie were both Minnesota “boys” and attended the University of Minnesota together. Years ago, Eddie called to thank me for a book I had sent him.

During our conversation he mentioned he was giving a talk that afternoon. He said his talk was done, but he hadn’t added humor yet. “You have to entertain in order to educate,” he explained. I have thought of his comment many times.

Adding humor to a talk can be tricky because humor varies from region to region. I am originally from Long Island, New York, and have a New York sense of humor. Would this humor appeal to my audience? The only way to know was to add some funny stories and give the talk.

First, I brainstormed on potential stories I could tell. Second, I made sure the stories fit the points I was making. Third, I reviewed the words I would use to tell the stories — action verbs, unusual word choices, and some of my favorite words. Fourth and finally, I practiced the talk with the stories and determined if the stories added energy.

As Edward P. Bailey, Jr. writes in his book, A Practical Guide for Business Speaking, boosting the speaker’s energy can boost audience energy. “Just act within your own personality,” he advises, and how you behave then you really care.

The first time I gave the talk I gave it to a group of grief professionals. They loved the stories and laughed when I hoped they would. The next time I gave the talk I shorted one story and impulsively added another. Again, the audience members “got” my humor and the stories lightened the mood. Humor can’t be added to all of your talks, but I think it can be added to most.

Time in The Elder Scrolls universe is primarily divided into Eras. The Dawn era marks the birth of this fantasy universe and continues with the Mythic Era further advancing from the First Era to the fourth one.

TESO takes place in the Second Era, specifically in a period of time known as Interregnum. As its name suggests (between kingdoms), it was a time of political instability. It began with the end of the Second Empire, marked by the assassination of Savirien Chorak, the last Akaviri Potentate and lasted until Tiber Septim founded the Third Empire. While The Elder Scrolls Online is currently in beta stage, there is plenty of information concerning the game’s timeline, included in TESO guides available online, but not only.

Factions

The game has three major playable factions: the Aldmeri Dominion, the Daggerfall Covenant and the Ebonheart Pact.

The Aldmeri Dominion is an alliance formed by three different races to fight against Men (humans). The Altmer, also known as High Elves are the first one that colonized Tamriel. They see themselves as a superior race and their high level of civilization is shown through their impressive architecture and extensive libraries. The Altmer are also very skilled in battle and have powerful mage abilities, which is why they are the leaders of this alliance. The Bosmer or the Wood elves are an agile and curious race. There are known to be highly proficient hunters and guides. Thanks to their curiosity and swiftness, the Bosmer became adroit thieves and masters of stealth. The feline race of Khajiit, was significantly crippled during the Knahaten Flu outbreak. As the Altmerians offered great support for restoring the order in Khajiit’s territory they are now loyal to them and can be seen in the first lines of Aldmeri Dominion’s armies.

The Daggerfall Covenant includes the Bretons, the Redguards and the Orcs. These three races, which had been enemies for a long time, managed to unite mainly forced by harsh economic conditions caused by the chaos following the assassination of the last Akavi Potentate. The Breton race are leading this alliance as King Emeric, the ruler of Daggerfall Covenant is one of their own. The elven blood that still runs through the veins of Breton people shows in their inclination towards magic. However, Bretons are also known for their craftsmanship and merchant skills. The Redguards are desert warriors that highly value their traditions and survival abilities. Honor and dignity are the most important value for this race, and even if they have the utmost belief in the divine, magical things are seen as suspicious. Last, but not least the third race included in the Daggerfall Covenant is the Orcs. While other races see them as cruel beasts, the Orcs are noble warriors with a history forged in bloody battles carried across their mountain homelands with harsh climate. As the Orc nation fought its way to the present, they have learned to forge amazing weapons and armors and are some of the most skilled smiths.

The third major faction that will be playable in TESO universe is the Ebonheart Pact. This fragile alliance was formed during the second Akaviri Invasion when the Nords where fighting the Akaviri army and the Dunmer and the Argonians joined their cause for yet to be explained reasons. Nevertheless, these three races which previously considered each other enemies are now united as the Ebonheart Pact. The Nords are the leading nation of this alliance and they are seen as fierce warriors and conquerors. As highly capable diplomats, the Dunmer have repeatedly used this skill along with their strategic ability and subterfuges to defend against provincial invasions. During the long period spent as slaves of the Dunmer, the Argonians have become experts in guerrilla-style warfare and managed to defend their borders from significantly larger armies.

And Now, Introducing To Some And Presenting To Others

I made the decision many years ago that I was going to set an against-the-grain trend for my life. In many cases, you don’t want to be a statistic such as an irresponsible father or a person that is a repeat offender of breaking laws. I have come to the clear cognitive conclusion that I need to reinvent myself and re-introduce myself to the WORLD. I have had many ups and downs in my life, but the full definition of my life is not predicated on my last moment. However, I am defined by the endless amount of potential that is being released.

Imagine for a moment, a roller coaster. Living in the Carolinas, it is a yearly event to go to Carowinds at the border of South Carolina and North Carolina. One of the scariest rides to me was the Carolina Cyclone. This ride had a very high point and two loops with quickly approaching turns. I can remember going up to the top of the highest point. It seemed as if it was going to take forever. I could see for miles as the ride’s pulling devices pulled the weight of the carts and participants towards the climax of its peak. Then, without notice, the ride would drop down this never ending hill, lap two loops and meet a sharp turn with increased speeds before arriving at our destination. The purpose of the hill was to create a high level of expectancy before using all of its might to gain accelerated momentum throughout the remainder of the ride. If the ride didn’t reach a certain speed, it wouldn’t be able to go through the loops and then continue through sharp turns and then finally reach its destination.

Such is life!

There are moments in life wherein it seems as if things are going slow. You may feel as if you are climbing a steep hill or mountain. These times are preparing you for the ultimate goal of complete satisfaction. We all have visions and dreams to live a life of complete fulfillment, doing what we want to do, but that comes with a price. It is comparable to a four stage business cycle. The stages are introduction, incline, climax, and decline. The introduction stage starts from the incipience of vision creation. Incline serves as a breeding ground with lots of phone calls, meetings, and planning. Then, you reach your climax (or as Oprah would say, your AHA moment!). This is the time wherein your money is making money for you. You are no longer making the phone calls, but the phones are ringing for you. Then, you may reach a moment of decline. This is not down time. This is when you are allowed to be even more creative and innovative and present even better ideas to the audience that is eagerly awaiting your NEW INTRODUCTION!

MLM Training – What To Do When Presenting Your Business To Your Prospect

In my recent articles I have trained you how to invite. Now I want to move to the topic of presenting your business. Read this MLM training tip as I explain step by step what is the BEST way to present your business to your prospect.

As you know I’ve divided the MLM training process into three steps – Invite, Present and Train. You invite your prospect to look at something that will help them, you present your product or business to them and you train those who want to do the business… that’s Invite, Present and Train.

Over the past two years I’ve focused my MLM training on Inviting – it’s now time for me to teach you Presenting.

I’m focusing on Presenting now primarily because of a survey that I sent out asking you what objections you’re getting. Your response has told me that you’ve worked through the big barrier of getting on the phone and are now having difficulty getting prospects to join; that’s where presenting comes in.

You personally may not see your progress, but I do. You know I spend very little time the past… but please allow me to point out some things. With “Professional Inviter” you heard live how to make calls. This gave you the very important “I can do that” idea in your head. You learned that you’re not “born” with the ability to communicate – you learn it. And, you learned words that describe different sections of inviting.

This is perhaps more important than you know and it’s worth the space in this article to explain it fully.

You see, every subject has “components” that make up that subject. (A component is a part which combines with other parts to form something bigger.) If you know all the components – you KNOW that subject. Take the very simple subject of a pencil. The components are lead, wood and eraser. Now, you could break each of those components into “sub-components.” The lead has different levels of hardness and shades, the wood has different colors and shapes and the erasers come in different textures.

The point I’m making is that we’ve taken a an MLM training subject, Inviting, and broken it down into its components (Ten Communication Qualities and six-step Inviting Formula) so that we can now IDENTIFY which part of Inviting we’re good at and which parts we need to work on. We never had that before. Two years ago, either a person was good at it… or they weren’t.

When a person doesn’t know the components that make up their subject, they are going to have big problems trying to diagnose problems. All they know is “inviting”, for instance and if it’s not going well, this normally results in a feeling of “I can’t do it.”

Ultimately where are we headed? Training. You’re paid in this industry for being great at training – not recruiting and not presenting. If I have 100,000 people in my downline and I personally brought in 1000 of them (I didn’t by the way, but just to make the math simple, let’s say I brought in 1000), that means that I brought in 1% of my downline. Are you starting to get the impact of what good MLM training means, versus good recruiting?

Now let me go back to subjects, components and sub-components. If you can’t IDENTIFY the exact component or sub-component where a person needs help, you will have big problems helping people and your only advice will be “just find more people” or “just do the numbers.” But, knowing your subject and the components that make up the subject gives you the ability to drill down and find the exact thing that needs fixing and help YOURSELF and help others.

What’s the difference between a mechanic and someone who knows very little about cars? The person who knows little will make a statement like, “It won’t start.” A mechanic (who knows his components) will immediately know WHY it won’t start – and therefore can fix it.

I’m explaining this to you because I was recently interviewed and the gentleman who interviewed me called me a “systems” guy. And he labeled himself an “artist.” It was said in a way to show the differences between the two of us. But you know…I’ve never met a painter who didn’t know the components of RGB (red, green and blue) colors. I’ve never met a musician who couldn’t tell the difference between a C and G note. How does a music teacher teach music anyway? By teaching the components that make up music! Someone (long ago) had to IDENTIFY and label each note before it could be taught to others.

So, please do not resist learning something because you’ve categorized yourself as a NON-systems person!

There is no other way to teach you than to break things into components and sub-components so you can see what makes up a good inviter, a good presenter and a good trainer. Once you know all the components, it’s like knowing all the keys on the piano. You can play any tune.

So the first thing you would need to understand about Presenting is that once you know your components – you can do anything – as long as you know all the components and how they relate to each other. Never would I suppress someone’s freedom to be fun, exciting, riveting and just all out funky… as long as they don’t leave out some vital component.

As an example, when presenting, you can be wild on the stage – as long as you always keep in the Communication Quality/component of staying interested in your prospect. As long as you do that – you can be wild. But violate that and you’ll be viewed as a nut or at best arrogant.

The CD spawned 2 singles “Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes”. They are both good songs but to me personally there are even better tracks on the CD. Actually I cant believe that “Don’t Let me Fall” and “Airplanes part 2 ” are not 2 more singles ( give them time they will get there ).

The biggest names on the album are Eminem and T.I. The T.I song is not bad but the Eminem track is amazing B.O.B and Eminem’s styles mixes very well, both of them have “clear” voices you can hear exactly what they are saying at all times ( unlike some of the other big rappers out there ).

B.O.B actually produced 3 of the songs and helped produce a fourth one, impressive for his first album. So he Produces raps and sings well, what more can we ask for?

The Album is defiantly worth it, if you are into hip hop at all you will love The Adventures of Bobby Ray.
